Update

Aloha,

My apologies, but I don't get around to updating 'the blog' much anymore since I mostly used it to post pictures in the past, and now that the 808PhotoVault.com website is up and running, I'll just be putting them there.  I do submit an 808Shows column to The 808 Scene Zine from time to time, and I put out a newsletter once a month or so…

On the bright side, you can now see a featured photo each week in the Online version of The Honolulu Star-Advertiser's TGIF. I will provide a bit of background information about the photo and it should be good fun so I hope you'll check it out HERE!

808PhotoVault.com set to launch on May 16th, 2010

Inspired by my wife and several friends, the goal of 'The Vault' is to provide a place
for talented local photographers to gather and share their images of live music…

as well as a central place for bands & fans to see what was captured at past
events. In fact, some of the photos inside date back to the early 1980's!!

What can you expect to see…??

How about vintage photos of acts like Sublime, Lagwagon, Bikini Kill, Meat Puppets, Danzig, AFI,
The Ramones, Bad Religion, The Foo Fighters, Dokken, Swingin Utters, Ozzy Osbourne, Body Count,
ALL, Suicidal Tendencies, Metallica, Fugazi, Social Distortion, Pennywise, The Vandals, Guttermouth,
Rancid, Reel Big Fish, Marilyn Manson, and Anthrax, plus mid-90's pics of local bands like Tweaked, Generic,
Ira Hayes, Unit 101, Broken Man, Grapefruit, The Knumbskulls, Red Session, Elvis 77, and The Tantra Monsters.
…just to name a few, dozen!

There's a ton of stuff we're sorting through and I'm excited to share it soon!

Mahalo to all the tremendous photographers that have shared some of their images!
Have something to share…?     Let us know if you'd like to get involved!

aloha,   Jason Miller

The Vandals on Maui and Oahu

Here are Marina's photos from The Vandals shows…
Thanks again to the people that helped packed the clubs each night.
…and of course The Vandals, one of my all-time favorite bands!!

It was a GREAT way to celebrate 15 years of Hawaiian Express / 808shows!
There's even a pic of my 3 oldest boys with Dusty Watson (The Queers, Agent Orange, and more)
and another with Warren, Dave, my oldest, my youngest, and me (slightly drunk).  Good times.

WARPED TOUR

Okay, okay, I know I have yet to get those 2009 Warped Tour photos up on here… but I will, I promise!

Just need to get them from Marina and we've been crazy busy.

But…  Warped Tour 2010 is well on it's way to being finalized.  In fact, tickets have already gone on sale.
This year I'm going to try and catch a Northern California date… June 26th.

It's got a lot of my friends playing and a line-up that's growing stronger by the day…
Book a flight now and don't miss out!!

While I'm here… check out a new site I'm involved with:   ChargedGBH.com
(and stay tuned for 808photovault.com as well)

If it's been a while, so look again at our set of pics from Warped Tour 2008.    All photos by Marina.

..and scroll down to see our collection from Warped Tour 2009.  Photos below taken by Marina and Jason.

PHOTOMANIA

Well… if you got my recent newsletter then you know what I'm talking about next, but the
early feedback strongly supports the creation of a central website that features local
photographers and Hawaii concerts…  now I'm really excited.

Stay tuned for more details, but for now, here's a link to some shots of a few local
bands as well as the band CDC, during their trip to Hawaii last year.
CLICK HERE to jump to the CDC show pics.  (Mahalo Alex!)

More news on this new site down the road.
aloha, jason

Want to trade??

Want to trade your time, energy, and computer skills??  For a long time now I have wanted to digitize the Hawaiian Express Records catalog and make it available for sale by donation… it's just never happened with 4 kids and a day job.

The Star-Bulletin was nice enough to do a feature article on my activities over the last 15 years, and it came up in our discussion, so why don't I make it formal!

If you'd like to trade for some merchandise, let me know!
I'm looking for someone that could help turn approx. 100 CD's into mp3's… and
If that same person could also help with scanning some old photos, I'd be really stoked!

I can't offer cash, but if you're a fan of local 'alternative' music, I have a lot of other stuff you might like.  CD's, vinyl records, DVD's, rare posters, a concert ticket every now and then… etc.

Send an email to hwnexp@aol.com

Photo Submissions

My lovely and talented wife Marina takes most of the photos for this blog, but we like it when other photographers send us stuff too! Here's a sample of some that we recommend at the moment. (Click on the Links to see more)

FLASHBACK: Green Day in Hawaii

Hawaiian Express is turning 15 years old this month…
As a result of some interview requests, I dug through some old photos.

Here’s a set of pics from the two times that Green Day has come to Hawaii for shows…
Grapefruit opened both times, and became good friends with the band.
In fact, Grapefruit and I spent a day at Billie Joe’s house in Berkeley while on tour.

Here’s a few of the pics (that I took) and scanned into the computer today!

The shots on stage are from Feb. 1996 @ Richardson Field.
(Grapefruit, Zoinks!, and Green Day all played that show)

The shots on the grass are backstage at UH in 1998.
Green Day, Grapefruit, and actor Matthew Fox!

and there’s one shot of the day we took Billie Joe surfing…

Flyers!

Here’s a few flyers for some upcoming shows we’ve been helping out with…
Perhaps you can make it out to some or all of them?

Lifetime Achievement Award

Wow.

Last Sunday I headed down with the family to check out the 2009 HUMA’s and it seems they had a trick up their sleeves…  Otto and his staff planned a new category.

“The Lifetime Achievement Award”

I was to be honored with the inaugural Tiki statue by surprise… they got my wife and kids in on the act by having them write some things about me and my two oldest sons read them to the crowd.

It was all news to me… so I was floored, and truly honored to have such nice things said about me, for simply doing what I truly love to do (Support Local Music!)

It’s nice to be recognized for all of my efforts, but thankfully I am not the only person who tries to make a difference, so I tip my hat to all of them as well!

The award itself was a nice surprise and I hope my little acceptance speech (off the top of my head) didn’t disappoint. I barely even remember what I said but I know I tried to convey how much I love my wife and kids for letting me risk money on shows and invite bands over to stay with us… as well as how much I deeply appreciate Hawaii’s outstanding bands and music fans.

Without such great bands and the support of those who make a donation at the door, things would grind to a halt.  (Mahalo)

I’ve been fortunate to make a ton of solid friends who are willing to lend a hand for the greater good and I can never thank them enough. They lend gear, they play for little or no financial gain, they spread the word on shows… and it all adds up. In the end we sometimes lose money, but it would have been worse without their help, so again, thank you all for even the littlest thing that you’re able to do to keep things going in the scene!!!

I should get back to my day job now, but thanks again to Otto and everyone behind the scenes for the surprise award and for another fun event.

I’ll hope to see you at a show soon, and while it was a “lifetime achievement” award that they felt I had earned, I’m hoping that my soon-to-be 15 years of doing what feels right, will one day prove to have been just the beginning!!

and maybe one, some, or all of my soon-to-be 4 sons will carry on the torch in years to come!
Even if they don’t…  I wasn’t the first, and I won’t be the last, but Hawaii is a great place to support local music.

ALOHA

I will add some photos from 2009 once I have them!!

For now, here’s a shot from the first year:

The Casualties – 2009

A few years ago, I had The Casualties in town for a Wednesday night show at Anna Bannana’s. Over 300 people showed up! We tried a new (larger) venue this time around and had another great show. Chris from Photocat808.com was kind enough to share his photos from 4play Niteclub in Aiea.

The Devil Wears Prada @ Warped 2009

Aloha…  the last couple years my wife and I have caught that last day of Warped Tour in L.A. because a high number of our friends were playing and it’s always a bit of a mad house, but usually an interesting experience, so what the heck… we’ve gone.  This year, we made sure that we didn’t miss TDWP since I had already booked them for a 2010 show in Hawaii.   (Weds. March 3rd at Pipeline Cafe to be exact)

The band was ALL OVER the stage and they had a HUGE crowd checking them out. It was pretty cool and Marina took a bunch of photos for you to enjoy…

[nggallery id=7]

When she’s able to find the time to sort through them all, Marina will be giving me a bunch of photos of other bands we saw at Warped Tour so stay tuned for those!  In the meantime, if you scroll far enough, you can enjoythe pics from 2008 in an older post!!

The A.K.A.S are coming! The A.K.A.S are coming!!

Yes, The A.K.A.S (are everywhere!) and they are coming to Hawaii for 3 shows in late August!

Hawaii’s own Michael Camino of the Hell Caminos has joined their ranks and they have been spending the summer on the 15th Vans Warped Tour.  When it’s over, they are flying to Hawaii to relax, and perform for us as well…

Aug 27 – Wailuku, Maui // Aug. 28 – Haleiwa // Aug. 29 – Honolulu
For up-to-date details, visit 808shows.com

For now, here’s a few pictures taken at their shows and a sampling of photos from Mike’s twitter page:

Screeching Weasel / Riverdales show in L.A.

Ben Weasel, Danny Vapid, and others got together recently to do a couple shows in L.A.
They played songs by Screeching Weasel, The Riverdales, and Ben’s solo albums.

Both shows sold out and I managed to get over there with the wife and kids to see a few friends and catch the second show.

Here’s a few photos from that really fun night:

[nggallery id=3]

…and before we got to The Knitting Factory, we stopped in at an art gallery
to catch an acoustic set with Kevin Seconds of the infamous 7Seconds.
Here’s a few pics from my phone!

CHIODOS (03.04.09)

Photos from their Hawaii debut:   Thanks for coming…  Sorry about the ending.
The band and I talked about getting them back here in the very near future.
I’ll add information to 808shows.com whenever I have details to share.

NOFX @ The Cellar 744 — LAHAINA, MAUI

I’ve had the pleasure of knowing these guys for a very long time, and they’re always GREAT.
I gave Mike & Hefe a ride from KTUH to Radio Free Hawaii WAY back in the day (for an interview)
and have set up a bunch of shows for Me First and the Gimme Gimmes over the years as well.

Anyway… These are shots from the second of two sold out shows on Maui this past January.
(It was also Fat Mike’s Birthday)

D.I. – DVD Shoot (Friday)

Here’s a group of shots from the first night of D.I.’s most recent trip to Hawaii.  Their set featured a version of “Voices” (off the new album) with Ross from G.B.H. on Bass, as well as a visit from pro-skateboarder Danny Way… not to mention a good turnout from Hawaii’s BEST, punk rock music fans!   MAHALO.

Guttermouth Photos

It was a lot of fun having Guttrmouth back in town. Three shows on two islands this time… Below are some photos from the all ages event at Anna Bannana’s. (6 of Guttermouth, 2 of Corrupt Absolute, and then 4 of The Substitoots)

LEFT ALONE UPDATE

Well, a lot has changed since the last Left Alone post… (see below)

Hawaii’s Nick Danger went on tour with The Hell Caminos, and Elvis from Left Alone was on tour with The Unseen, so Kat from Hellcat Records’ Left Alone used the time to come over to Hawaii in order lend a hand to Black Square (temporarily taking Nick’s place).  With Kat already here, and Elvis ending his run with The Unseen, the other members of Left Alone re-united with Kat in Hawaii for some shows (and I lost the photos, but we have them back now and will post them below this text!)

But… it turns out that Kat decided he liked Hawaii even more than before and is now back here in the islands for a much longer stay.
Nick still hadn’t returned to Hawaii from his own tour and was offered a chance to replace Kat in Left Alone, and he agreed.
Bottom line, good for you, guys! Sounds like you’ll both be enjoying something new for a bit. Cheers.

Without any further delays, here’s a sample of the pictures from Left Alone in Hawaii – June 2008!

Warped Tour 2008

When I heard about the old-school stage at the Warped Tour, and saw the line-up for the last day of the tour, I made plans to get to LA to see some great bands and say hello to some old friends. It was fun. I got burnt to a crisp, the day went by really quickly which meant we didn't get to see nearly as many bands as we'd hoped, but the fine folks at Goldenvoice hooked me up with a pair of VIP wristbands and Marina managed to snap a few pics, so for those of you that couldn't make it, here's a few of her favorites… starting with some random shots:

<<< Click to enlarge in a new window >>>

G.B.H.  (Ross Lomas – bass sometimes lives in Hawaii)

Random Stuff…

THE BRIGGS

THE AGGROLITES x 2 / AGAINST ME! / THE HORRORPOPS

WHOLE WHEAT BREAD / MIKE WATT

T.S.O.L.

KATY PERRY / LONGWAY (with Trever from Hawaii's No Bare Feet)

THE GERMS

FEAR

D.I.

KEVIN LYMAN, watching DI perform.

3OH!3

THE VANDALS
(with SUM 41's drummer)

THE DICKIES

We of course got to see lots of other bands…
We Are Kings, The Action Design, Gym Class Heroes, Street Dogs, etc…
but we just didn't get any good pictures of those bands, sorry.

Warped Tour is always a massive, crazy day, but it was a good time for an old fart like me.

Sadly it hasn't been to Hawaii in a very long time and will likely never return,
so next summer, if you like the line-up, take a trip to the West Coast!!

Bayfest 2008

Marina had a chance to go and check out Bayfest (the annual event at Kaneohe Marina corps base) up close and snapped a few pictures of the bands LIVE and EVERCLEAR performing on stage. Enjoy…

GUTTERMOUTH

We’re co-presenting the return of Guttermouth in late October 2008,
and some opening act spots are available in Hilo and Honolulu…

If interested, write to GuttermouthHawaii@yahoo.com for more information!

ALOHA

LEFT ALONE in Hawaii

Left Alone is a great band on Tim Armstrong’s Hellcat Records…
They’ve now been to Hawaii twice and put on some excellent shows each time. If you missed them, kick yourself right now.

Like I am for losing the pictures from their recent visit to Kainoa’s and Anna Bannana’s…

If they turn up, we’ll post ’em!

New York vacation…

So my wife was hired to take some pictures in New York and I loaded up the kids to tag along.

My friend Elvis has been filling in on bass for The Unseen the last few months and it just so happened that they had some East Coast shows with Tiger Army while we were there. The only one we could hit up was a small monday night show of their own in Danbury, CT and it was a ton of fun.

You can see Elvis playing with his regular band, Left Alone, here in Hawaii (again) on June 20th and 21st and they’re not to be missed!!

I nearly had a Tiger Army show set-up this past March but it didn’t work out. I do hope to bring them and The Unseen out to Hawaii before long, but for now, here’s some pics from that Unseen show on the East Coast.

The good, the bad, and the Leftover Crack

Leftover Crack wrote to me a few months ago and said they were ready to come to Hawaii. They’d tried before and things didn’t work out. This time it did. Friday night saw a PACKED house at Anna Bannana’s. Saturday was a full crowd at Kainoa’s on the North Shore. Here’s some pictures from the 2nd show.
